An interdisciplinary workshop exploring the ritual, ethical, and aesthetic dimensions of scribal practice across religious traditions.
Across a wide range of religious traditions, the production and transmission of authoritative texts have been understood as practices that extend beyond the mere reproduction of written content. Scribal activity was often embedded in systems of ritual discipline, ethical responsibility, and devotional engagement, shaping not only the material form of texts but also their authority, interpretation, and reception.
Bringing together specialists in Jewish, Christian, Islamic, and Buddhist manuscript cultures, this WORKSHOP examines the figure of the scribe and the act of writing as objects of historical, philological, and religious inquiry. Particular attention will be paid to the ethical, ritual, and material dimensions of scribal practice and to the role of writing in the transmission of religious knowledged.
